FAQs

Each sheet of Fremont glass is handmade, so natural variations in color, pattern, and texture are to be expected. You might notice small marks from the production process—these aren’t flaws, but part of what makes mouth-blown glass so unique and beautiful. It’s all part of the charm of traditional craftsmanship.

Can I visit Fremont? Yes! Please contact us at fremontantiqueglass@gmail.com to make an appointment for glass shopping and/or production viewing.

What is antique sheet glass?

Antique sheet glass refers to the traditional method used to create each sheet. A cylinder is blown, cooled, cut open, then reheated and flattened into a sheet. This technique has been used for over 1,000 years.

At Fremont, it takes two full days to make a single sheet of our antique glass. On average, about 14 sheets are produced each day.

What are the advantages of using antique sheet glass?

Mouth-blown antique sheet glass has a vibrant, fire-polished surface and endless variation in color and texture.

How can Fremont Antique Glass be used?

Fremont glass can be used in stained glass projects, architectural applications, and select kilnforming processes.

Our flashed glass can be etched, engraved, painted, and kiln-fired.

Most current Fremont glass is formulated with Spruce Pine batch and generally works well with Gaffer and Reichenbach colors. While it may fuse close to COE 96, we strongly recommend running your own compatibility tests, as the base glass recipe may vary slightly depending on the color. Spruce Pine tends to devitrify quickly. Place surface textured glass with the textured side up during firing. Glass containing gold aventurine is not fusing-compatible. Older Fremont glass may have different base compositions and may not be compatible with current production.

Glass terms
Price codes are determined by the materials and process used to make the glass. Other letters and terms describe the glass.
CR glass is dipped into water in the blowing process to create a crackle pattern and then reheated to seal the cracks.
F clear glass with a layer of color on one side. Flashed glass can be etched or engraved to reveal clear.
P glass contains pink. The cost is significantly higher than other colors because of the metals used as colorant.
Reamy glass has an extra layer of slightly different formula glass applied on the surface to add streaming texture and more refractive qualities.
SH glass color transitions from from bottom to top of the sheet.
Seeds in glass are bubbles, in scattered or uniform pattern
SF is a treatment to create a surface texture on one side of the glass. This adds to the refractive quality.
Striations are created by rubbing the hot cylinder in a trough spiked with graphite to create fine grooves across the surface of the glass adding character and refractions - an "antique" look.
V glass means there are variegated color bands across the sheet in light and dark.

What is the sheet size?
•    Average Sheet Area: 3 to 3.5 sq ft
•    Typical Dimensions: Approximately 19–21” tall × 23–25” wide (sheets are not square)
•    Thickness: Just over 1/8”
•    Weight: Approximately 1.7–1.9 lbs per sq ft

How can I apply for a wholesale account?

We are currently accepting applications for new retailers. We are looking for stained glass supply shops who are brick and mortar with established patronage. To avoid overlap, we typically space retailers at least 200 miles apart.

If you’re interested, please contact us through our website and include:
    • Your business name and address
    • Website
    • A brief introduction to you and your shop

Studio wholesale accounts may be available to full-time artists and studios with proof of resale/business license. Please note that we can not keep up with demand for all special requests. We will do our best to accommodate you. If you have a special color request please email photos of the color or mail samples of the glass you are trying to match.

    What are shipping costs?

Shipping costs are based on the size of your largest sheet and the total weight of your order. Rates shown at checkout are estimates and may not reflect the final shipping cost. If you are overcharged, we’ll issue a refund when your order ships.

    Why is shipping so costly?

To prevent breakage, glass is packaged in large boxes with ample cushion. The larger the box, the more costly, even if it does not weigh much.

How do I buy a crate of full sheets?

Sturdy wooden crates are built to safely transport full sheets of glass. Each crate holds a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 38 full sheets.

You can buy full sheets directly from our website or work with our sales manager to select from in-stock glass. For specific colors or special orders, lead times range from 3 weeks to 3 months.

A crating fee of $75 applies, in addition to shipping and handling. If you don’t have a forklift or loading dock, a lift gate is usually required (approx. $70). Crates can be delivered directly to your address or picked up at a freight terminal.
